The 2026 World Cup is the biggest in history — 48 teams, 104 matches, and a knockout stage that, for the first time ever, begins with a Round of 32. If you're used to the old 16-team knockout bracket, here's everything that's changed and exactly how a team gets from the group stage to the final in New Jersey.
How teams reach the knockout stage
The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four (Groups A to L). After each side plays three group games, the teams that advance are:
- The top two from each of the 12 groups — that's 24 teams.
- The eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups — ranked by points, then goal difference, then goals scored.
Together that's 32 teams into the knockout rounds. For more on how the group phase and tie-breakers work, see our World Cup 2026 format explained.
The knockout rounds in order
| Round | Teams | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Round of 32 | 32 | 16 |
| Round of 16 | 16 | 8 |
| Quarter-finals | 8 | 4 |
| Semi-finals | 4 | 2 |
| Third-place play-off | 2 | 1 |
| Final | 2 | 1 |
Every knockout tie is a single match — there are no two-legged ties and no replays. Win and you advance; lose and you're out.
How the bracket is built
Unlike the group stage, the knockout bracket is pre-determined: the path is fixed before the tournament starts. Group winners and runners-up are slotted into specific bracket positions, so as soon as the groups finish you can map out every team's potential route to the final. The eight third-placed qualifiers are assigned to bracket slots using a fixed combination table based on which groups they finished third in.
This is why "path to the final" previews appear the moment the group stage ends — the matchups on each side of the draw are locked in by the bracket, not by a fresh draw.
What happens if a knockout match is level?
If the score is tied after 90 minutes, the match goes to 30 minutes of extra time, and then a penalty shootout if still level. The away-goals rule does not apply at the World Cup. We break this down step by step in what happens if a World Cup knockout match is a draw.
The path to the final
The road ends on Sunday, 19 July 2026 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — see our MetLife Stadium guide. The third-place play-off is staged the day before. From the Round of 32, a finalist must win five straight knockout matches to lift the trophy — one more than at any previous World Cup, a direct result of the expanded 48-team format.
