Der Klassiker — Bayern Munich against Borussia Dortmund — is the headline fixture of German football. It pits the country's dominant force against its most popular challenger, and for over a decade it has decided Bundesliga titles. Here's the head-to-head record and the history behind it.
All-time head-to-head record
As of the 2025/26 season, Bayern and Dortmund have met around 138 times, with Bayern holding a clear edge:
| Team | Wins (approx., to 2025/26) |
|---|---|
| Bayern Munich | ~68 |
| Draws | ~37 |
| Borussia Dortmund | ~33 |
Bayern also lead the all-time goal count in the fixture, and have won the large majority of recent meetings.
How the rivalry grew
While Bayern have long been Germany's biggest club, the modern rivalry caught fire when Jürgen Klopp's Dortmund broke Bayern's grip on the title in 2011 and 2012. The two clubs then met in the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley — an all-German showpiece Bayern won — cementing Der Klassiker as a fixture of European significance.
Biggest moments
The fixture's history includes one of the most lopsided results in Bundesliga history — Bayern's 11–1 win in 1971 — as well as title deciders, cup finals and dramatic late winners that have defined seasons.
