Konstantinos Koulierakis headed Wolfsburg in front from a Christian Eriksen corner before the break, and St. Pauli substitute Abdoulie Ceesay levelled early in the second half with a header from Connor Metcalfe's corner. Wolfsburg regained the lead when goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj inadvertently punched Eriksen's corner into his own net, and although Eriksen then missed a penalty after a VAR review for handball, Dzenan Pejcinovic pounced on a rebound to make it 3-1. The win confirmed St. Pauli's relegation to Bundesliga 2 in 18th place, while Wolfsburg finished 16th and secured a spot in the relegation/promotion play-off.
